Magellan’s Joel Carlins Inducted into Chicago Association of Realtors Hall of Fame

For his distinguished career as a real estate developer, Joel M. Carlins, co-CEO of Magellan Development Group LLC has been inducted into the Chicago Association of Realtors (CAR) illustrious Hall of Fame. Some 1,200 real estate professionals, business and civic leaders were expected to attend the Sept. 28 inaugural at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Carlins has been one of the principal driving forces in the evolution of Magellan Development Group into one of Chicago’s most prolific condominium developers, creating premier urban residences designed with sensitivity to their surrounding neighborhood.

Since its founding in 1987, Magellan’s creative Chicago development work has reintroduced condominium living to the central business district, revitalized the River North and Gold Coast communities and now extends to the creation of the magnificent Lakeshore East urban village. Magellan recently received CAR’s 2007 Good Neighbor Award in the Commercial New Construction Category for Lakeshore East, winner of a National Honor Award for excellence in urban design from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its master plan.

The zenith of Carlins’ vision as a real estate entrepreneur, Lakeshore East is a $4 billion lifestyle center that will combine housing, retail, office, hotel facilities and a proposed elementary school, bordering a magnificent, award-winning 6-acre park. Perceived as one of the largest parcels of downtown property under development in any major U.S. city, this new mixed-use complex is situated near the confluence of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River on the booming New East Side of downtown Chicago.

Carlins attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois and a Juris Doctor of Law degree from DePaul University. He is a member of the Sigma Delta Chi professional journalism society and is licensed to practice law in Illinois and the Virgin Islands.

Carlins previously has held leadership roles or is actively involved in an extensive list of charitable and community organizations, including: president of Patrons of Washington Square Park; director and past president of Yul Brynner Cancer Research Foundation; co-chairman of the NFL Mackey Awards Banquet on behalf of the Better Boys Foundation and is the founder and sponsor of the Ogden Elementary School Mentoring Program and Scholarship Fund. He is currently a director of the Lawson House YMCA and the Greater North Michigan Avenue Assn. and is a former director of the River North Association and the Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is also a member of the Chicago Chamber of Commerce, The Chicago Development Council, and City Club of Chicago.

Other past directorships include Chicago Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and recently served as a director of Roosevelt University’s newly established Real Estate Program. He has been a member and lecturer of the executive board Roosevelt University’s Real Estate MBA Program. He has lectured on various topics at several academic institutions as well as numerous real estate and professional organizations including Real Estate Investment Association, the Illinois Bar Association and the Illinois CPA Society.

Academic institutions with which he has been affiliated include Columbia College, DePaul University’s masters program, the University of Buffalo, the University of Illinois and the Urban Land Institute.

In addition, Carlins was honored by the Anti-Defamation League with the 2002 Arthur Rubloff Humanitarian Award.
